Survivors... well, dies

Tuesday 13 April 2010

Rumours circled yesterday that Survivors had been axed, but I wanted to wait for official confirmation. So here it comes: the BBC have decided to cancel post-apocalyptic drama Survivors, after two series. A spokesman for the BBC said:

"The BBC is committed to making a broad range of varied and ambitious drama, but in order to achieve this we do have to move on from some pieces in order to allow new work to come through -- after two series, Survivors will not be returning."
While series 1 averaged 5.19m viewers, series 2 fell to a low of 3.81m. While that's a great rating for digital channels these days, it's too low to justify its expense as a major primetime series on BBC1. I've already heard people suggest that BBC3 or 4 could take Survivors on (albeit with a reduced budget), but that's very unlikely because Survivors doesn't fit with either channel's demographic.

Of course, Survivors' demise is an added frustration for fans because series 2 didn't end conclusively and instead lay groundwork for a third series that now won't happen. I guess this is where petitioning begins for the BBC to commision a special episode to finish the story, but is there anyone who cares enough to start a campaign? Anyone..?
