NBC pull THE PLAYBOY CLUB

Tuesday 4 October 2011
After just three episodes, NBC have cancelled The Playboy Club, making it the first casualty of the new season in the US (as many predicted it would be). The '60s drama's latest episode had fallen to 3.39m viewers in the Nielsen ratings, from an already disappointing premiere "high" of 5.02m.

The network was also facing pressure from the Parents Television Council, who wanted people to boycott the show over its "pornographic material"—a spurious claim that hopefully had no bearing on this decision. Various advertisers also pulled out of the show, with one requesting NBC "cancel the degrading and sexualizing program immediately". The network's Salt Lake City affiliate were also refusing to show it.

Television sure is a cutthroat business in America! Think of the millions invested in developing and producing this series, and all the episodes that have been completed but will now never be broadcast. There are currently no plans to release The Playboy Club on DVD, but I'd be surprised if that doesn't happen at some point in the future. No UK channel had bought the show, either, but maybe NBC will now try selling it to foreign broadcasters for a cut-rate fee?
